What Is a Korean Facial? A Doctor’s Guide

A Korean facial is a multi-step clinical skincare treatment built on the Korean aesthetic philosophy of prevention, hydration and long-term skin health. Rather than correcting problems in a single aggressive session, it works cumulatively: layered cleansing, gentle exfoliation, targeted actives and deep hydration, repeated over a planned course, to improve the skin’s quality, resilience and clarity over time.

That is the short answer. The longer answer — what actually happens, why the method works the way it does, and what it can and cannot do — is worth understanding before you book anything. As a Korean aesthetic doctor practising in the UK, I spend a good deal of consultation time correcting ideas imported from marketing rather than from Korean practice itself. This guide sets out the method as it is actually practised.

The philosophy: prevention over correction

Korean aesthetics starts from a different premise than much Western treatment culture. The question is not “what is wrong with this face and how do we fix it today?” but “what does this skin need to be healthy, and how do we maintain that?”

Three principles follow from this:

  1. Skin barrier first.** The outermost layer of your skin regulates moisture and protects against irritation. Much of the Korean method — gentle exfoliation, layered hydration, avoidance of unnecessary aggression — exists to strengthen this barrier rather than repeatedly breach it.
  2. Cumulative over dramatic.** A Korean facial is designed as a course, not an event. Each session builds on the last. This is why the results read as “healthy skin” rather than “treated skin”.
  3. Detail over intensity.** The method is precise: which acid at which strength, which serum in which order, how each layer is given time to absorb. Intensity is easy; precision is what requires training.
What happens during a Korean facial

Protocols vary by clinic and by skin, but a properly structured session follows a recognisable arc:

  1. Assessment.** Skin type, barrier condition, sensitivity, pigmentation and hydration are evaluated before anything touches your face. At Arra this assessment is carried out under a doctor-led protocol — the treatment plan is clinical, not a menu choice. *[CONFIRM assessment process]* **
  2. Double cleansing.** An oil-based cleanse removes sunscreen, makeup and sebum; a water-based cleanse follows. It is gentler and more complete than a single foaming wash. **
  3. Gentle exfoliation.** Enzymatic or mild acid exfoliation smooths texture and prepares the skin to absorb what follows — without the redness associated with abrasive scrubs or aggressive peels. **
  4. Targeted actives.** Serums are selected for your skin’s needs — hydration, brightening, calming — and layered in order of weight so each can absorb properly. **
  5. Hydration and finishing.** Layered moisture is the signature of the method: essences, hydrating masks and barrier-supporting finishing steps. Some protocols add massage or device-based steps. *[CONFIRM Arra’s specific protocol steps and any devices used]*

A session typically takes 45–90 minutes. *[CONFIRM Arra timings]*

What results to expect — honestly

Immediately after a session, most people see well-hydrated, calm, luminous skin. That effect is real but temporary on its own.

The meaningful results are cumulative: improved hydration levels, more even tone, refined texture and a more resilient barrier over a course of treatments. This is where the much-referenced “glass skin” idea belongs — it describes deeply hydrated, even, light-reflecting skin that is *maintained*, not manufactured in an afternoon.

Two honest caveats, because evidence-based practice requires them. First, individual results vary with skin condition, consistency of treatment and home care. Second, a facial protocol cannot do everything: concerns such as established volume loss or deep static lines sit outside what any facial can address, and a responsible clinic will tell you so at consultation rather than let a course disappoint you.

Is a Korean facial right for your skin?

The method’s gentleness makes it suitable for a wide range of skin, including sensitive and reactive skin that tolerates aggressive treatments poorly, and it is appropriate across skin tones because it does not depend on harsh resurfacing. Suitability for your specific skin — and the right protocol within the method — is a consultation question, which is exactly why Arra treats the consultation as the first treatment.

The Arra approach

Arra opens in Mayfair in September 2026 as a Korean aesthetic clinic combining the detail-oriented approach of Korean aesthetics with evidence-based practice. Treatments are planned by a doctor, personalised to your skin, and honest about what they can achieve. *[CONFIRM treatment names from final list for internal links]*
